4th Grade Happenings for the week of November 18-22, 2013
This week's blog has been prepared by the 4th grade class.
Math
Last week we reviewed place value, with word form, expanded form, and numerals. We also compared numbers. In multiplication we focused on the 9's.
Reading/Grammar
Last week in Reading we worked on Turkey Fact and Opinion. We read the Tale of Despereaux. And we also worked on prefixes and suffixes. We spent a lot of time working on Thanksgiving Food Alliterations.
Social Studies
Last week we learned about the culture, food, landmarks, music, and industry in the Southeast Region.
Cursive
In cursive last week we focused on K, R, and S.
Spelling
Last week we did not do a spelling test, but we had several practice spelling bees in the classroom.
Special Events
Last week, we went bowling and ate lunch at Cici's Pizza. We also watched Monster's University and hunted for positive character traits in the movie. We also learned some Cooperative Learning Structures.

4th Grade Happenings November 11-15, 2013
This week I was ill on Thursday and Friday. I want to give a big Thank You to our wonderful substitute teachers for stepping in and taking over the classroom!!!
Math - we spent a lot more time practicing how to Factor Numbers. The students who have mastered their multiplication tables are excelling at this!!! In our multiplication practice we focused on the 8's.
Reading - We studied a humorous realistic fiction story entitled: Dear Mr. Winston and small readers about snakes. The skill we focused on was inferencing.
Grammar - We practiced using plural and a possessive nouns.
Social Studies - We are learning about Kansas and also the Southeast Region.
Cursive Handwriting - Overall, I am seeing great Improvement in student handwriting. YEAH!

4th Grade Happenings the Week of November 4-8, 2013
Math - We worked on the Properties of Addition and started learning about "multiples" of numbers and "factoring" numbers. In multiplication, we focused on the 7's.
Reading - We read about Ben Franklin in our Treasures textbook and focused on finding the "problem and the solution" in a text.
Grammar - We worked on singular and plural possessives of a word. We have been exploring figurative language with metaphors and alliterations.
Science - We finished up our study of the "States of Matter" with a unit test.
Social Studies - We began exploring the "Southeast Region".
Other: On Friday, we attended an all school assembly and celebrated achieving our Good Behavior Goal with "technology day" in the classroom. We also learned about Veterans Day and made patriotic feathers for our Veterans Day Turkey.

4th Grade Happenings the Week of October 28th - November 1st, 2013

Mathematics: Multiplication and Division - We have learned about fact families, additive and multiplicative properties, and practiced making bar diagrams. Our target multiplication facts this week were the sixes.
Reading: We read about China. Our vocabulary words included dynasty, heritage, temple, overjoyed, and preserve. Plus, we did a fun Halloween Readers Theater to practice our fluency.
Spelling: Unit 2 Week 3 words were mainly made up of complex consonant clusters - str, spr, shr, and scr
Grammar: We worked on plural nouns with a focus on irregular plural nouns. We made a huge "Plural Noun Pumpkin Patch" which we displayed outside of our classroom.
Handwriting: We are working on our cursive and even made symmetrical skeletons from our cursive signatures.
Science: We are learning about the States of Matter. We made Green and Blue Slime and discussed Non-Newtonian fluid.
Halloween Party: We had a wonderful Halloween Party and Parade!! Many thanks to the parents that supplied all the wonderful treats and spoiled us rotten!!!!!!!!

4th Grade Happenings for the week of October 14-18, 2013
Math -
This week we finished up Unit 2 in our new My Math Book. Unit 3 focuses on multiplication and division. We will complete our review of multiplying by 4 this week and review multiplying by 6 next week.
Social Studies -
Finished up our study of the Northeast Region.
Reading -
We worked on inferences in our Treasures Reading Book.
Three students achieved their AR goals for the quarter and received a prize.
Reading Levels were given to the students.
Grammar -
We learned about singular and plural nouns.
Spelling -
This week we studied the words from Unit 2 Week 2.
No spelling test next week due to short week.
Note: I sent out a special email to parents called "The Perfect Potluck". Please sign up for items to bring to your child's Halloween Party. We want to make it a HOWLING success!!!
